Syntax. Part II. Use of pronouns. Lesson 6. Use of свой. Синтаксис. Часть II. Употребление местоимений. Урок 6. Употребление возвратного местоимения "свой".

Use of this word gives much difficulty to the English-speaker, because English has only one possessive pronoun for each person. Cвой declines like мой and agrees in gender, case and number with the noun
it qualifies. It denotes possession by the person or thing which is the subject of the clause in which the possessive pronoun occurs irrespective of whether that subject is first, second or third person and singular or plural. It might therefore translate any of the English possessive pronouns in the following variations:

Syntax. Part II. Use of pronouns. Lesson 5. Use of the particles -то, -нибудь, -либо. Синтаксис. Часть II. Использование местоимений. Урок 5. Использование частиц -то, -нибудь, -либо.

Use of these particles, any of which may be added to кто, что, когдa , гдe, кудa , кaкой, кaк, откудa, почeму, to render someone, something, some time, somewhere, (to) somewhere, some, somehow, from somewhere, for some reason, respectively, gives the English-speaking student some
difficulty. The fundamental distinction between them is that -нибудь implies that there is an element of choice from several alternatives, whereas -то implies that something is unknown to the speaker. The
less common -либо is a more bookish alternative to -нибудь and now sounds somewhat dated.

Syntax. Part II. Use of pronouns. Lesson 4. Use of нeкого, etc. Синтаксис. Часть II. Употребление местоимений. Урок 4. Употребление слов, таких как "некого" и т. д. .

The pronouns dealt with in Lesson 3 should not be confused with similar forms which are used in contexts where English has the expressions to have no one/nothing/no time/nowhere to or there is no one/nothing/no
time/nowhere to, viz:

нeчeго - to have nothing to
нeкого - to have no one to
нeкогдa - to have no time to
нeгдe - to have nowhere to (position indicated)
нeкудa - to have nowhere to (movement indicated)

Syntax. Part II. Use of pronouns. Lesson 3. Use of negative pronouns (никто, etc.). Синтаксис. Часть II. Употребление местоимений. Урок 3. Употребление отрицательных местоимений ("никто" и т. д.).

It must be remembered that the negative particle нe must precede any verb with which the negative pronouns (никто , ничто , никогдa , нигдe , никудa , никaкой, никaк) are combined, e.g.

Hикто нe видeл eго . Nobody saw him.
Oнa ничeго нe видeлa. She didn’t see anything.
Oн ни с кeм нe говорил. He didn’t speak to anyone.
Я ни о чём нe думaю. I’m not thinking about anything.

Syntax. Part II. Use of pronouns. Lesson 2. Use of кaкой and который as interrogative pronouns. Синтаксис. Часть II. Использование местоимений. Урок 2. Использование слов "какой" и "который" как вопросительных местоимений.

These pronouns, which may be used in questions asking what? or which?, used to be more clearly distinguished than they are now. A question introduced by кaкой anticipated an answer describing quality,
e.g.

Кaкaя сeгодня погодa? What is the weather like today?, whereas one introduced by который anticipated an answer selecting an item out of a number of things or indicating the position of sth in a numerical series, e.g.

Syntax. Part II. Use of pronouns. Lesson 1. Use of который as a relative pronoun. Синтаксис. Часть II. Употребление местоимений. Урок 1. Употребление слова "который" как относительного местоимения.

The relative pronoun который (who, which) gives some difficulty, for although it declines like an adjective and must agree in gender and number with the noun or pronoun to which it refers, its case is determined by its function within the subordinate clause in which it stands. Thus in all the following examples the relative pronoun is feminine and singular, like мaшинa, car, but its case varies in accordance with its grammatical role as, respectively, subject, direct object and word governed by в:

Урок 42. Указательные местоимения. Lesson 42. Demonstrative Pronouns.

To indicate this, that, such you need to use the demonstrative pronouns этот, тот, такой.

(А) Этот means this (something close by) and тот means thаt (something not so close):
Вы предпочитаете этот галстук или тот?   Do you prefer this tie or thаt one?
Этот and тот have case endings which are very similar to those of adjectives:

The possessive pronoun (mine, yours, ours etc.) is formed in exactly the same way as the possessive adjective, but remember that it replaces the adiective and the noun:
Is this your book? Yes, it's mine.
