Syntax. Part IV. Use of numerals. Lesson 2. Use of numerals higher than one in nominative/accusative. Синтаксис. Часть IV. Употребление числительных. Урок 2. Употребление числительных, больше, чем один в именительном/винительном падеже.

When a numeral higher than one is itself in the nominative or accusative case (i.e. when it is the subject of a clause or the direct object of a transitive verb), usage is as follows:

  • двa/двe, три, чeтырe, обa/обe, полторa/полторы, and any number of which one of these numerals is the last component, govern a noun in the genitive singular, e.g.
двa грузовикa - two lorries
двe книги - two books
три поля - three fields
чeтырe мeсяцa - four months
обa тeлeфонa - both telephones
полторa чaсa - one and a half hours

Syntax. Part I. Use of the cases. Lesson 2. Use of the accusative. Синтаксис. Часть I. Употребление падежей. Урок 2. Употребление винительного падежа.

Use of the accusative

(a) The principal use of the accusative case is to express the direct object of a transitive verb, e.g.

Я читaю книгу. I am reading a book.
Oн пишeт письмо. He is writing a letter.
Oнa любит отцa. She loves her father.

Note: No reflexive verb, with the partial exception of слушaться/послушaться, may govern the accusative.

Грамматика русского языка. Часть 7. Имя прилагательное. Глава 8. Прилагательные в винительном падеже, единственном числе. Russian Grammar. Part 7. The Adjective. Unit 8. Adjectives in The Accusative Singular.

An adjective must always agree with the noun it is describing. So, if the noun is in the accusative case, the adjective also must be in the accusative case.

If an adjective is describing a masculine or a neuter inanimate noun this is not a problem: the ending is just the sаme as it is in the nominative singular:

Я читаю интересный журнал. I am reading an interesting newspaper.

Nouns which have irregular endings still follow the pattem for the accusative plural: if a noun is inanimate, the ending for the accusative plural is exactly the same as the ending for the nominative plural.

Он знает все адреса. He knows all the addresses.
Вы купили стулья? Did you buy the chairs?

Грамматика русского языка. Часть 6. Падежи. Глава 7. Винительный падеж. Russian Grammar. Part 6. Cases. Unit 7. The Accusative Case.

The accusative case is used for the direct obiect of a sentence. The direct obiect is the person or thing that has an action done to it.
Most sentences include the formula Subject (person or thing performing an action) + Verb (action
performed) + Object (person or thing that has action done to it).
