There aren’t any gerunds in the Russian language. There is only a verbal noun (отглагольное существительное). The English gerund cannot be translated as a verbal noun.
Imperfective gerunds are formed by replacing the last two letters of the third-person-plural form of the present tense with -я or (after hushing consonants) -a. These forms are invariable.
нaчинaть (нaчинa/ют) нaчинaя - beginning
комaндовaть (комaнду/ют) комaндуя - commanding
жить (жив/ут) живя - living
приходить (приход/ят) приходя - arriving
