Грамматика русского языка. Часть 3. Различие согласных звуков по глухости / звонкости. Глава 1. Звонкие и глухие согласные (Продолжение (2)). Russian Grammar. Part 3. Voicing and Devoicing of Consonants. Unit 1. Voiced and Voiceless Consonants (Continued (2)).

Voicing before a Voiced Consonant

The opposite holds true. If a voiced consonant (other than л, м, и, or р) follows a voiceless consonant, the voiceless consonant becomes voiced.

For example:
сделать [zd'eh-luht'] to have done

Compare:

просить [pruh-s'eet'] to ask and просьба [prawz'-buh] request
сажать [ suh-zhaht'] to seat and сжать [zzhaht'] to squeeze
собрать [suhb-raht'] to gather and сбор [zbawr] collection

As in other instances of voicing and devoicing, when a voiceless consonant becomes voiced, the change occurs only in the pronunciation. The spelling of the Russian word remains the same.

Voicing and Devoicing of Prepositions

The preceding rules for the voicing and devoicing of consonants hold true for prepositions consisting of the one letter is considered part of the following word.
Practice the following examples.

в окне [vuhk-n'eh] in the window

The в was not devoiced because it was followed by the vowel о. (However, it was pronounced as if it were part of the first syllable of the following word. There was, and should not have been, any hesitation between the two words).

в комнате [fkawm-nuh-t'ee] in the room

Here, the в was followed by the voiceless consonant к and became devoiced. (Again, it should have been pronounced as part of the following syllable without ant hesitation whatsoever).

с дороги [zduh-raw-g'ee] after the journey
с обеда [suh-b'eh-duh] from dinner

The first с became voiced (being followed by the voiced consonant д); the second с remained unvoiced (being followed by an unstressed о. Once again, both prepositions should have been pronounced as part of the following syllable).

The rules for the voicing and devoicing of consonants also apply to longer prepositions, as well as to any words ending and beginning with consonants that fall under these rules.
